Protecting Your Privacy

Doesn't this make it difficult for employers to reach me?

Yes, to a certain extent limiting your personal contact information does make it more difficult for potential employers to contact you. In most cases this is not a huge issue, however, as long as you regularly monitor and respond to contacts made via the contact information you provide in your online resume.

Most employers are willing to accept limited contact information on the first pass, as long as you are prompt and responsive about providing more information if they choose to contact you about an open position. Remember, too, that some potential employers actually prefer candidates who keep their identity well protected. They may interpret this as showing a good deal of professionalism and discretion, or an indication of a senior level person in your field of profession.

Choose job search sites carefully

Regardless of how well you limit personal and current employment information in your online resume, it is critical to be careful about submitting it to job sites. Once your resume is submitted it is out of your control, so you should carefully check the privacy and confidentiality policies of every site you use. Read the terms and conditions completely to clearly understand what they will and will not do with your information.

Also avoid sites that send out resumes indiscriminately in 'blasts' to huge numbers of potential employers. This is the employment equivalent of spam or junk email, and most employers will simply delete or ignore resumes received this way. Or, perhaps even worse, they will include these resumes in their database without your knowledge, setting up the potential of receiving duplicate resumes if you submit one separately on your own.
